The escapade through Mendelssohn’s chimerical Midsummer continues. Tuesday night featured the summer’s second performance of Music@Menlo’s “Midsummer Night Dreams” program: prefaced by Ligeti’s ingenious Six Bagatelles, Romantic masterworks by Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Spohr held another capacity Stent Family Hall audience in their thrall. After giving the afternoon master class, pianist Jeffrey Kahane teamed with artistic director Wu Han for another sparkling reading of the Nocturne and Scherzo from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In the midst of making his impressive festival debut this week, cellist Paul Watkins leads Wednesday’s master class, coaching the Chamber Music Institute’s young artists in works by Brahms and Cėsar Franck (12:00 p.m., Stent Family Hall). Wednesday night’s Prelude Performance offers Brahms’s autumnal Clarinet Trio and the majestic Piano Quintet of Robert Schumann (6:00 p.m.), followed by the season’s final performance of Concert Program III (8:00 p.m., St. Mark’s Episcopal Church)
