Renowned American baritone Randall Scarlata makes his Music@Menlo debut with one of the signposts of the lieder repertoire, Franz Schubert’s magnificent Winterreise (Winter Journey). The poetic wanderlust of this definitive work by the Romantic master adds a contemplative dimension to the 2010 festival season’s regional focus. Composed in the penultimate year of Schubert’s life, this cycle of twenty-four songs on poems by the German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller encompasses a profound breadth of human emotion. Randall Scarlata appears with pianist Gilbert Kalish, one of the foremost art song interpreters of our time.
