Encounters, Music@Menlo’s signature series of multimedia symposia led by classical music’s most renowned authorities—named in memory of Michael Steinberg, the eminent musicologist and Music@Menlo guiding light—embody the festival’s context-rich approach to musical discovery and add an integral dimension to the Music@Menlo experience. The 2011 festival season’s four Encounters illuminate different aspects of the life and artistry of Johannes Brahms, arming audiences with the social and historical context surrounding each Concert Program. Using musical examples and drawing upon other art forms and cultural phenomena, this summer’s Encounter leaders explore Brahms’s musical persona and bring listeners inside the music, providing an essential component of the festival experience for longtime music lovers and new listeners alike.
