Dear Friends,
In 2008, Music@Menlo renews the journey we began in our inaugural season with fresh inspiration, optimism, and enthusiasm. Music@Menlo began its maiden voyage in 2003 with thematically oriented, meticulously designed concert programs, myriad educational opportunities for both new listeners and lifelong music lovers, and a host of other opportunities for musical discovery. Over the past five seasons, Music@Menlo has continued exploring possibilities to create an increasingly enriching festival for all participants.
This season, in celebration of the depth of our art, Music@Menlo revisits the concept behind our first festival—a musical journey through time. In designing 2003’s Innovation/Evolution: The Unfolding of Music, we discovered infinite programming possibilities—each as thrilling as the next—through which this journey could be taken. We began, even then, to look forward to one day resuming the adventure. As we embark on The Unfolding of Music II in this, our sixth season, it is an opportune moment to remind ourselves of the exciting evolution of classical music and to experience that evolution in an endlessly fascinating and truly organic way, well-suited for both newcomers to Music@Menlo and friends from our first season.
During Music@Menlo’s 2008 season we will visit composers, works of music, and musical ideas and themes both new and familiar. The tremendously rich breadth of the chamber music literature promises music lovers a lifetime of discovery and rediscovery, as we meet new pieces that expand our horizons and revisit beloved works that have become steadfast companions. This summer, after traversing nearly 400 years of great music, we’ll hear the world’s newest chamber work in the form of Music@Menlo’s first commission and world premiere. No occasion could provide a more fitting conclusion to The Unfolding of Music II.
We thank those of you who joined Music@Menlo in the first five years, for rewarding us with unfaltering commitment, enthusiasm, and hunger for ever deeper and more challenging musical experiences. You consistently filled our halls—not only to attend concerts, but also to enjoy the multitude of additional events that make Music@Menlo unique. You listened with great discernment and devotion. Most importantly, you made clear your expectation that Music@Menlo be the best music festival anywhere. We know of few other arts presenters so fortunate to have developed this kind of relationship with their audiences, and we could not be happier to bear the responsibility of fulfilling that expectation. To new and old friends, welcome aboard. Departure is on July 18!
Best wishes,
